Marty Craggs spotted in bed with two others in a very public place!

Valentine's day 2002

If you happened to be walking down Northumberland Street past Fenwicks department store in Newcastle upon Tyne on Thursday 14th February 2002 – Valentines Day – at around 1.40 pm, then you would have seen a very strange sight! For there was Marty Craggs in bed in the shop window along with Julia Hankin and Paddy MacDee, both from Radio Newcastle while the two other Happy cats looked on! If you don’t believe it, then check out the photographs!

So what was going on? Julia Hankin, from Radio Newcastle was broadcasting her show live from the shop window and the Happy Cats had been invited along to play live from the shop window. In between numbers Marty hopped into bed with her and her fellow presenter to give her a gift of a giant cookie with the message “The Happy Cats love Julia Hankin”.

The band had time for only two numbers and sang “You Got Me On the Run” with the line amended to standing in Fenwick’s window rather than the expected chip shop. To play up to the two o’clock news, they chose to sing Speed of Loneliness.” It was a fun event to watch and The Happy Cats themselves found it a very ‘surreal’ experience. At the minute they cannot believe they will ever play a gig more unusual than that one, but who knows what time will bring….?
