Toon Travel and the Happy Cats – Again!

What a day! We were in Liverpool with Toon Travel for the final league match of the season. As usual we have had a trophyless season – however one thing that has never failed to cheer us up has been the Happy Cats.

On this particular Saturday we were in the Wilmslow pub in Liverpool. The Happy Cats played from 12 – 2 before the match and from 9 – 11 afterwards. We arrived early on the Saturday and had a couple of hours before the gig started. We got the best seats in the house and got ready for the music to begin. By the time 12 o’clock came round the room was full of Toon fans - every single one encapsulated by the performance in front of them.

All the usual songs were sang, as was the Blaydon Races, Fog on the Tyne, and a few other Newcastle related songs that really got the crowd going. Meet Me On The Corner probably got the biggest pre-match sing-a-long – the whole pub up on their feet singing along.

I wondered how all the fans would take the Happy Cats but every time Marty began to sing there wasn’t a single interruption. When each song ended a Toon song would start up, with Brian effortlessly playing along, and end as soon as the next HC song started. Excellent – total respect for three brilliant blokes.

When it got to about 10pm in the evening, the Happy Cats had just refilled their glasses and were about to start up again when Marty suggested that I should get up and sing the next song with them. Little did I know that Keith Barrett had asked the Happy Cats if I could sing with them. I joined Marty, Les, and Brian, on the stage – I didn’t have a clue what I would be singing, then they started up – Tears of Love. Not only had I been drinking all day and been requested to sing – but they had got me up to sing a song that starts off in English but finishes in French! Despite all the drink I gave it my best shot and enjoyed every minute of it. Cheers lads – it doesn’t come any better than this!

When I asked my mate Mark if I sounded ok he said ‘put it this way you got all the words right!’ I think this was a polite way of saying I cant sing.

Throughout the day we were treated to various songs , Follow The Moon, It Doesn’t Come Any Better, as well as Bob Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right (an absolute classic), Brown Eyed Girl, and many more. We danced, we sang, we drank, we drank some more, and had a fantastic time. If Marty, Les, and Brian enjoyed it half as much as us they will have had a great day.

Thanks anyway to the Happy Cats – throughout a disappointing season following Newcastle United you have always brought a smile to our faces.

See you all soon
