THE SHY TOTS

THE GRAND HOTEL

A very brief review, this one, as I can say very little about the songs that were performed because I didn't really know any of the ones they sang!.

I’d heard about the Shy Tots several years ago as being the band Marty occasionally played with when he wasn’t touring with Lindisfarne, but had never had the opportunity to see them – they certainly never seemed to get as far as Teesside!  So when we heard the original members were going to do one gig at The Grand Liz and I thought we had better go along and see what they were all about, and who they consisted of.

We eventually got to The Grand during the interval (problems with windscreen wipers and getting lost!) and discovered that all the Happy Cats were involved in some way!

Marty and Brian were performing and Les was the 'crew' for the night.  When the second half started I was immediately glad I had gone – a group of talented musicians, who had a great time, playing lively Irish music.  Brian told us that they hadn’t played together since New Year’s Eve, and they were trying to remember how they did things, but it didn’t seem at all like this – can’t imagine how good they’d be if they had been rehearsing!  Most of the songs I’d never heard before, as I haven’t spent much time in folk clubs in the past – Liz, who has, knew nearly all the songs, and felt she’d been transported back 30 years!

There was a very appreciative audience, who obviously knew the band well, and kept them supplied with whiskeys – a tray kept appearing with another round for everyone.  Before the encore they said they’d only come back on if they had more whiskey so some arrived; during the last song someone came round asking for contributions towards a collection so they could be bought one last round!  They were all still upright and were able to sing and play, but I’m not sure how!

They eventually finished playing at about midnight, and we wearily started the long drive home, looking forward to the next time we could see them, hoping our husbands didn’t think we’d left home.  Hopefully they might be persuaded to advertise any future gigs on the Happy Cats site, so we can all go!
